THERAPEUTIC APPROACH
Acknowledging systems of oppression is really important to me - it is a core piece of my practice.
There’s a trend in the therapy profession of making the entirety of a client’s struggles their responsibility, and painting the illusion that they have complete control over their situation. I think this perspective disregards the very real systems in our society which favour some, and oppress others.
Many of my clients are sex workers, disabled, trans, queer, BIPOC, neurodivergent, or belong to other groups which do not receive privileged treatment in our world. I think it is essential to acknowledge that the system is rigged and some things are within our power and control, while others we can address with techniques for resilience and regulation.
My therapeutic approach is client centered at its foundation. This means that we can start wherever you’d like to start, and I always find that we end up where we need to go. It also means that I regard you as the expert in your own life; I don’t have all the answers, I’m here to support you in finding your own. I’ve studied, and continue to study, a number of different therapeutic modalities (see here), and I pick and choose based on the client, their goals, and what fits for them.
From a broad standpoint I work from what we call a ‘bottom up’ approach, rather than working ‘top down’. This means that I look at core issues, and root causes of distress, and work to attend to those pieces, knowing that taking care of the roots, also supports growth of the branches and leaves.
